From landing to driving

Dalaman is a small airport with a short walk between its two terminals, so the gap between the baggage belt and the driver seat is usually measured in minutes rather than hours.

Search

Enter your real landing and return times. The fleet shown is what suppliers actually have free for that window, not a brochure list.

Book

Reserve the car that fits your group and your road. Most listings can be cancelled free if the flight or the plan changes.

Land

Clear passport control and follow the signs for car hire. The domestic and international terminals sit about 200 m apart on one walkway.

Drive

The D400 coast road starts at the airport gate. Turn west for Sarigerme and Dalyan, east for Gocek, Fethiye and Oludeniz.

What the desk will ask for

Three groups of paperwork cover almost every handover at Dalaman. Getting them ready before you fly is the difference between a five minute collection and a queue.

Documents

  • Your national driving licence, held for at least a year with most suppliers
  • Passport, matching the name on the booking
  • An International Driving Permit if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet
  • The booking reference, on your phone is fine

Payment

  • A card in the main driver name for the balance and any hold
  • Cars marked no deposit skip the security hold entirely
  • Card rules vary by supplier, so read the terms on the car you choose
  • No cash is needed at the desk for the rental itself

On the road

  • Seat belts front and rear, and a child seat for under twelves
  • Headlights on through the tunnels east of Gocek
  • Speed cameras are common on the D400, especially near junctions
  • Fuel stations thin out inland, so fill before heading for the gorge

How far is everything, really

Distances on this coast are short but the roads bend, so drive times matter more than kilometres. These are the journeys people actually make from the airport gate.

Close enough that a late landing is not a problem.

Destination Distance Drive Why go
Sarigerme about 20 km roughly 20 minutes Long sandy beach and the resort hotels nearest the airport.
Dalyan 22 km about 20 minutes River boats, the rock tombs at Kaunos and the mud baths.
Gocek about 25 km roughly 25 minutes Marina town on the Fethiye road, quiet out of season.

The main resort belt, comfortable on the first evening.

Destination Distance Drive Why go
Fethiye 45 km about 40 minutes The largest town on this stretch, with the harbour and the market.
Oludeniz 62 km about 55 minutes The lagoon and the paragliding launches above Babadag.
Kayakoy just inland of Fethiye under an hour The abandoned hillside village, best reached by car.

Worth a full day, and the reason a car pays for itself.

Destination Distance Drive Why go
Marmaris about 90 km around 1.5 hours Over the pine ridge to the Aegean side of the peninsula.
Saklikent past Fethiye about 40 minutes beyond Fethiye A deep gorge you wade into, cold even in August.
Patara roughly 120 km southeast around 2 hours Ancient ruins behind one of the longest beaches in Turkey.

What travellers told us

We landed just before midnight and were on the road to Gocek inside half an hour. The desk was still staffed and nobody tried to sell us cover we had already paid for.

Hannah Whitfield · Leeds

Booked a small automatic because of the climb up to Oludeniz, which turned out to be the right call. The price quoted online was the price on the counter.

Pieter de Vries · Utrecht

A car for the week meant Dalyan on the Tuesday and the gorge on the Thursday, without booking a single excursion.

Where Dalaman sits

The airport sits on the flat delta between the mountains and the sea, with the coast road running east and west from the gate.

Questions before you book

Dalaman is an airport and a farming town rather than a resort, so almost nobody stays there. Everything visitors come for sits between 20 and 90 km away along the coast. Shuttles run to the bigger resorts on a fixed timetable, but a car is what lets you reach Dalyan, Saklikent or a quiet cove on your own schedule.

Most suppliers at Dalaman set a minimum age of 21 and ask that you have held your licence for at least a year. Larger and more powerful cars often carry a higher age limit. The exact rule belongs to the supplier, so check the terms shown on your chosen car before you book.

Bring your national licence and your passport. Some suppliers also ask for an International Driving Permit, which is worth carrying if your licence is not printed in the Latin alphabet. Confirm the requirement in your supplier terms before you travel rather than at the desk.

Live prices in the search above currently start at around EUR 40 per day and run to roughly EUR 65 for the larger cars in the fleet. Summer is the expensive season on this coast, and booking a few weeks ahead is usually cheaper than walking up to a desk in August.

Dalaman handles a lot of late charter arrivals, so many desks cover evening flights. Out of hours cover is set per supplier and can carry a fee, so enter your real landing time when you search and the results will reflect what is genuinely available.
